Vina Cobos Cobos Malbec 2018 - In Bond

Vina Cobos Cobos Malbec 2018 - In Bond

  • Argentina
  • Malbec
  • Zalto Denk-Art Universal Glass

The cardinal wine and founding inspiration for the Viña Cobos portfolio involves a vine and cluster selection of the highest quality Malbec fruit from within their top estates. Harvested at optimum ripeness between March 15th and May 4th. Aged for 18 months in a combination of new French Taransaud and second use barrels before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

99 Points - James Suckling “Incredible purity of fruit in the nose, offering crushed, perfectly ripe blackberries and currants with raspberries and citrus. Some black liquorice, too. It’s full-bodied with density, precision and gorgeously fine tannins. Great length going on for minutes. A blend of mostly Chañares with some old-vine fruit from Marchiori and Zingaretti. Such precision to this. Tight now. Try after 2026.”

Vina Cobos

Vina Cobos was founded in 1997, this high altitude winery in Argentina’s famed Lújan de Cuyo district is the brainchild of renowned Napa winemaker Paul Hobbs and his partners, Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud.

Production is centered on the release of wines from old vines with low yields across four labels: Felino, Bramare, Bramare Single Vineyard and Cobos. Felino represents the entry level wines with an emphasis on varietal character, fruity notes and freshness on the palate. Being versatile styles they drink well on their own or with food. Bramare, the next tier up, comprises varietal wines from the specific parcels of the Lújan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco regions. These are often vineyard sites owned by growers with whom the winery has long-standing contractual arrangements.

A change in gear at this level sees the wines undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts, oak ageing in premium barrels with fining and filtration avoided for maximum flavour expression. It is with the Bramare Single Vineyard range where terroir expression is remarkable. In particular, the Marchiori Vineyard, which is owned by Andrea Marchiori’s family showcases vines of more than 50 years of age with a south-eastern exposure that result in wines of both opulence and balance. The Malbec produced here is profound, long-lived and an outstanding example of this variety. At the very top of the estate’s portfolio is The Cobos label which includes the Malbec and a Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon blend called Corte uNico, recently renamed Volturno.
