1 x Standish Schubert Theorem 2018
100 Points James Suckling “Mica-laced soil from the Schubert Vineyard in Roenfeldt Road, Marananga and fermented as 50% whole clusters. The site has six parts and all are made as a single parcel and then the wine is assembled. There’s distinctive complexity of fruit here with all shades of red, blue and purple through to black. There are also ripe dark peaches and nectarines as well. There’s a spicy edge, too, with some almost flinty, graphite notes. The palate has such intensity and power and really long, deep black fruit builds through the finish. Impeccable depth of tannin here. Rich blood plum flavors, intersected with blackberry. So saturated in flavor, so long and full of energy. The vinous intensity on the finish is spectacular. This is something really special. Try from 2024."
1 x Standish The Relic 2018
Stuart McCloskey - Tasted 5 June 2024 "Decanted, poured back into the bottle, and sampled the following day. I strongly advise on at least an 8-10-hour decant. It’s been four years since I sampled / opened a bottle, which and given the structure and concentration of the wine, isn’t long at all however, I am intrigued to see how she’s coming along… The nose unfurls at a glacial place, and you need to work to unscramble the black hole of aromatics. It’s dark (clearly!) and certainly brooding. Mulberry, blueberry compote, violet, anise, woodfire smoke, mint, wonderfully floral, fresh thyme, tang from blood orange and sweet spice. Savouriness comes in the form of beef dripping and black olive. The palate is drinking much better than I was expecting – rather accessible with a decent decant. I love the silkiness – so creamy. Gosh, this is dripping with succulence. Equally, this remains structured, commanding and balanced. Tannins are delivered with finesse rather than grip. The sweet fruits (black & blue) do not runaway – savoury / herbal components provide a grown-up perspective as does the tang from ripe blood orange. Lordy – such a beautifully crafted wine. Confident enough for the catwalk, but her beauty comes from being natural and unforced. It was a knock-out wine from the release. It’s now got better… Heroic, benchmark, Aussie Shiraz. Drink now to 2050."
Erin Larkin “The viognier presents clear expressions of stone fruit and finesse here, the palate is silky and plush. The viognier can enhance aromatics and colour, but it also silks out the palate, leaving a viscose trail in its wake that is both stunning and calming at once. This can be served either before or after the collection but not in the midst – it is distinctly different… unified by the modern, gentle winemaking hands of Dan Standish, but unique in its expression of cool viognier fruit characters, too. Glorious. Graceful. Elegant. Full. Exciting. Yes.”
1 x Standish The Standish 2019
99-100 Points - Stuart McCloskey “We decanted the full suite at 4:00pm on Wednesday 10 February with round one of my sampling taking place the following day at 10:30am. The bouquet is a mesmeric and heady mix of dark cocoa, mocha, graphite, iodine, mineral accented black and blue fruit (almost liqueur-like), Crème de mûre, mulberry, woody spice box, so exotic, blood orange and all brushed with a wand of dried lavender. A little musk on round two with the dried spice box on the finish. The palate is extremely dense, full-bodied and demands your attention. As with Lamella, this packs a concentrated punch, but carries no excess weight. The fruits are sweet, expansive and reach those hard to find areas. Monolithic but with so much grace and skill on show. Spice cake and violet pastille interwind with damson and blueberry compote. Black cherry too with the faintest whisper of vanilla. The mineral laced fruit component builds and builds as does the power that knocks you sideways. This is exquisitely balanced with tannins that provide a little edgy grip. The finish is never-ending as it keeps giving. More spice and I adore the marine / saline tinge. Served using Zalto Bordeaux glassware. Drinking window; Yet another one for the cellar and requires a decade to truly unfurl, but and with 24 hours in the decanter, will provide you with a special, vinous moment. Unless you’re below the age of 30, this will outlive us all…”
Erin Larkin “Traditionally my favourite wine in the release, not for its immediacy or charm (like the relic) or its elegance and nuance (like the lamella), the Standish brings the savoury brute, it brings the spice, and it brings the staunch. This is the wine in the collection that opens and changes the most as it opens up. It’s got the spicy yin to the fruity yang, wrapped in a fortune cookie of tannin. It’s tannic and dense and honestly pretty unapproachable without enough time to open up so I look forward to seeing it later today. It has a compact spice market located within the confines of the fruit – it’s the usual suspects – star anise, fennel, liquorice root, Szechuan peppercorn, but there’s also fresh grated nutmeg, saltbush, ferrous and red gravel. The wine flexes and contracts and it paces its way across the palate, enduring through the finish, giving us an insight into the folds of flavour and concentration that it will reveal in time. Super impressive, I love it for different reasons to the 18”
98 Points - Nick Stock (jamessuckling.com) "Such concentrated blueberry and cherry aromas, as well as violets and fresh-earth aromas. This delivers an immediate sense of richness with chocolate in the mix, too. Very pure. The palate has a very resolved feel with deep, essence-like fruit flavors that hold a rich, plum and blackberry line that drives long and very even. This is really something. Drink over the next decade.”
Simply put, Dan Standish produces the best Shiraz to come out of the Barossa, hence our excitement to be Dan’s UK importer. A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father... All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follow a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk. As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label.
Dan is credited as being one of the most experienced winemakers in Barossa, not only for his incredible work at the great Torbreck winery but also working with his friend Jaysen Collins of JC’s Own, on their joint project Massena. He has also spent time honing his talents working vintages in both the Napa and Sonoma Valleys in California and Rioja in Spain, but his real passion developed through the experience gained whilst working in France’s Rhône Valley. The time in Rhône working with Shiraz, which Dan is almost unrivalled in his expertise with, and the techniques he learned there led to the creation of The Relic in which Dan co-ferments a small quantity of Viognier with Shiraz to create a wine that stands up to the very best in the northern Rhône.
