Stuart McCloskey, tasted 7 July 2026 "This is one seriously impressive sparkling wine. In truth, we were all taken aback by the quality-to-price ratio. I can honestly say this is the finest sparkling wine I have sampled at this price point. It shouldn't be this good.
The colour glows a deep golden straw, hinting at the maturity waiting in the glass. From the very first swirl, the bouquet is wonderfully evolved and incredibly generous. Layers of acacia honey, warm brioche, buttered croissant and toasted sourdough mingle effortlessly with roasted hazelnuts, baked apple, preserved lemon and ripe yellow orchard fruits. Extended time on lees has added remarkable complexity, yet everything remains beautifully fresh, vibrant and utterly inviting.
The palate is sumptuous. The mousse is exceptionally fine, creating a creamy, almost velvety texture that glides effortlessly across the palate. Honeyed citrus, baked apple, lemon curd and toasted almonds are wrapped in layer upon layer of brioche and delicate patisserie notes. There is genuine richness here, yet the wine never feels heavy. Instead, a bright seam of acidity slices through the generosity, carrying everything towards an impressively long, mineral-laced finish.
What impressed me most was just how complete this wine feels. I enjoy the combination of generosity and restraint - rich enough to satisfy, yet precise enough that you instinctively reach for another glass. Every element feels perfectly judged, from the luxurious texture to the pinpoint freshness that keeps the wine poised from start to finish.
Serve in a Zalto Universal stem. Throw your flutes away. Drink now or cellar for at least another five years.
PS: We have taken our full allocation. Don't come back asking for more once you've opened your first bottle - they simply won't be available. Take my word for it - this is a sparkling wine that will blow your socks off. And for the money, I honestly don't think there's a better bottle currently available. Sorry, England... as much as it pains me to say it, we simply don't produce a sparkling wine at this price that can rival this Aussie. Incredible…"
Vigneron's Release Isabella Rosé Sparkling 2018
Hand-harvested | 60% Pinot Noir | 40% Dijon Chardonnay clones from Sidewood's celebrated Mappinga Road Vineyard, Oakbank
Minimum five years' bottle ageing on lees
Release Date March 2024
Stuart McCloskey, tasted 14 July 2026 "Another sparkling wine with genuine pedigree. Sidewood has resisted the temptation to produce a simple, fruit-driven wine designed purely for immediate appeal. Instead, they have crafted a sparkling Rosé of real substance and refinement, allowing hand-harvested fruit from the celebrated Mappinga Road Vineyard to rest peacefully on its lees for a minimum of five years. Sparkling wines at this price are generally crafted for affordability rather than distinction. Compromise is almost expected. The 2018 Isabella refuses to compromise - It is an approach that demanded patience, investment, conviction and an unwavering belief that time would reward exceptional fruit.
Let's be honest. Around this price, you are typically shopping amongst good, non-vintage English sparkling wines. Please don't mistake this as a criticism of England - we produce some beauties. Rather, it highlights just how extraordinary Sidewood's achievement really is. My job has always been to find wines that over-deliver, and I honestly believe this is another example.
The bouquet is wonderfully expressive, bursting with pristine wild strawberries, freshly picked raspberries and vibrant redcurrants, beautifully complemented by blood orange zest, rose petals and a delicate floral lift. Five years on its lees introduces another layer of sophistication, gently weaving notes of toasted almonds and freshly baked pastry through the vibrant fruit without ever diminishing its remarkable freshness.
The palate is beautifully sculpted. An exceptionally fine, persistent mousse creates a silky, almost weightless texture that glides effortlessly across the palate before revealing layer upon layer of flavour. Vibrant red summer fruits remain wonderfully pure and energetic, beautifully supported by crystalline acidity and an underlying chalky minerality that provides both tension and precision.
Nothing feels exaggerated. The dosage (10 g/l) is well judged, the acidity perfectly integrated and the influence of extended lees ageing wonderfully restrained. Rather than chasing richness for its own sake, Sidewood has allowed freshness, elegance and vineyard character to take centre stage. Bottle age has helped enormously.
Where the magnificent 2014 Isabella Rosé Late Disgorged speaks of maturity, profound complexity and the rewards of a decade resting on its lees, the 2018 celebrates youthful vitality, precision and impeccable balance. They are not competitors, but two beautiful expressions of the same philosophy, viewed at different stages of their journey.
Pour generously into a Zalto Universal stem and allow this wine to reveal every nuance. Drink now and over the next five to seven years (perhaps a decade) as it continues to gain further complexity and harmony. Bloody delicious and ridiculous value."
