Stuart McCloskey, tasted 23 July 2025 “From one of Barossa’s fabled vintages, and it shows from the get-go. The colour is a deep and opulent purple black. Shimmering reflection – beautiful to look at! The depth and complexity is staggering. Aromas soar from the glass in layers ranging from ripe, plum, blackberry, fig, boysenberry, Black Forest / Christmas cake, oodles of liquorice, vanilla, roasted chestnuts, mocha / dark chocolate, cinnamon stick and star anise… With more aeration (hours in the glass) – Sea kelp and that marine saltiness comes to mind (when you walk along the seashore on a rough winter’s day). Very umami – serious, too. Cold steel, leather and pastille fruits finish off the wonderous, aromatic journey. The palate delivers waves of viscosity, and generosity whilst retaining vigour. Of course, the wine is still youthful and shows off its powerful, luxuriousness in abundance. Yet, and a hallmark to the quality of the vintage, fruit selection, and to Craig Stansborough – this is balanced perfectly. Tannins are satiny but do grip a little, and provide great framework for the fruit. This feels and tastes so pure… The flavours align to the bouquet – ripe black fruits, sweet spices, anise, dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, coffee bean, leathery earthiness – charcuterie is lurking in the background. Flavours and tannins run long and deep. In many ways – this vindicates great, Aussie wine, and their domestic release price. What a glorious revelation. This is very special and will cellar for at least a further two decades. Sealed under screwcap and served using Zalto Burgundy stemware.”
98 Points - Andrew Caillard MW "Deep crimson. Beautiful classic Barossa Shiraz with intense dark plum, praline, paneforte aromas and roasted chestnut, wax polish, chinotto notes. Richly concentrated and vigorous with abundant dark plum, blackberry, mulberry fruits, fine plentiful chocolaty/ grainy textures and mocha, espresso oak complexity. Finishes chocolatey firm with persistent tannins and integrated mineral acidity. Superb barrel work. Drink to: 2023 – 2045.”
Jancis Robinson.com, 1 Jul 2021 “Deep black-purple. Evident chocolate and cocoa notes from oak, with an underlying spiciness of the grape itself. Underneath the layer of oak is a brooding density of baked blackberry and damson fruit. That concentration is very evident on the palate, where there’s plenty of volume and weight, coating the fine tannins and carrying through to a multi-layered finish of spices, dried liquorice and cocoa. This certainly puts its icon credentials forward though it is far from an over-extracted fruit bomb. A finely executed example of its idiom.”
We are thrilled to offer a collection of cellared treasures direct from the producer including the full ‘Icon’ suite.
Abednego
Langton’s – Australia’s famous wine auction house, “Grant Burge’s other ‘icon’ wines include the rather classical, indeed brilliant Abednego Shiraz Grenache Mourvèdre. This has almost no presence on the market which must say something for its immediate approachability.”
Meshach
It is no exaggeration to say that there are few people in the world who understand Australian wine better than Andrew Caillard MW who penned, “It is Grant Burge’s Meshach Shiraz that has played no small part in the ascendancy of the Barossa Shiraz vernacular. This wine brings utterly sublime vineyard resources, marketing imagination and accessibility to the fine wine consumer. While it is pricey, it’s also fair. It generally offers a much better bang to your buck than many over-hyped cult type Shirazes. The fruit is sourced from the 100-year-old Filsell vineyard planted on deep alluvial soils near Lyndoch. The vineyard is triaged on optimum ripeness and flavour development. This is often around 14 degrees Baume. The wine is vinified in open headed down fermenters at warm temperatures. Towards dryness, the wine is drained and pressed, completing fermentation in mostly new American oak hogsheads. Meshach is a highly concentrated and generous Barossa style with a ripe, dense palate packed with fruit, pronounced tannins and supported by American oak. Meshach is already highly regarded for its potential lo... Read more Read less
