97++ points - Stuart McCloskey “I believe two years have passed since I last sampled this vintage. There are similarities with the current release – buttered popcorn and that savoury character is unmissable however, and if you dig a little deeper, the bouquet reveals poached, spiced pear, bee pollen, cardamom, nutmeg rasped over creamy, rice pudding. There’s warmed oyster shell and citrus oil – lemon being obvious, but I also detect orange too. The perfume is full-throttle and makes it almost impossible to move on to stage two – the drinking. The palate is deeply elegant and exudes a grace all of her own. The palate feel is voluminous and buttressed by a perfect acid profile. Expansive, mid-to-full scale, yet it’s tensile and provides layer-upon-layer of purity – crystal clear. The fruit evolves around golden orchards - ripe and succulent. I love the spice and the aromatic fennel seed. This is a truly great Aussie Chardonnay with a long future ahead (another decade or so). Decant for 30-minutes and do not overchill. Served using Zalto Burgundy glassware.” Tasted 9th December 2021
96 Points - Decanter "Lovely, intense and mineral laden nose with flash of vanilla, sesame, ripe pear and toast. Beautiful wine with lovely crisp acidity, a tangy creamy palate and flavours of stone fruits and nuts. This has real finesse, length, minerality and depth."
96 Points - James Halliday "Fonts of a tiny size running every which way on the large, busy front and back labels allowed me to ascertain the clone is Mendoza. This whinge to one side, the wine does full justice to the excellent vintage, with white peach and grapefruit a familiar but ever enjoyable repartee between them."
Soumah Equilibrio Chardonnay 2018 -
97 + Points - Stuart McCloskey “Sitting between two, great vintages. The aromatic profile is entirely different. The perfume delivers notes of lemon oil, yellow stone fruits and minerality is on full show as is the wave of saline along with fresh oyster shell. There’s a little freshly baked bread which brings the trio together. Resoundingly, the ‘fresher’ and most mineralité of the trio. The palate is marine-esque, salty and juxtaposed with confit lemon – pear too. Again, minerals on show / chalky and fresh fennel seeds galore. Textural effortlessness segues into a perfect line of acidity and a chalky extract – a touch pithy. Despite it’s tension – it does feel wonderfully glossy and welcoming. In summary; This is the understated, elegant sibling however, it does conceal quite a punch of complexity. Adolescent but immensely enjoyable. Drink now to 2031+. I suggest serving the trio in the following order; 2018, 2017 followed by 2019… Same rules apply – keep it away from the fridge and if possible, serve using Zalto Burgundy glassware.”
97 Points - Decanter "Among all of the different regions where Chardonnay has impressed in Australia, the Yarra is perhaps the one where the fruit itself charms most readily from the off. This steel-green wine carries its oak very lightly, and the fruit sings out: nectarine, peach and dessert apple all draw the drinker into the glass. On the palate, the wine is soft, tender, almost juicy: its perfect ripeness apparent in that limpidity of expression, and in the seamless incorporation of vibrant and rounded acidity into a natural and succulent poise. The oak, once again, is almost invisible: a swelling of tone rather than flavour. The only danger with deliciousness of this order is that you might be tempted to drink it all too quickly. Fine quality raw materials suggest there's no hurry here."
We find this hidden gem located down a country lane, in the dress circle of the Warramate foothills of Gruyere.
It is from here that Soumah set out to make wine with the charm of northern Italy but the provenance of the majestic Yarra Valley.
Unravelling the story behind the exotically named Soumah, it is in fact an abbreviation of South of Maroondah, hinting at its location in the heart of Yarra Valley. Their wines however are far from exotic and instead they brim with the cool climate character and provenance of the majestic Yarra Valley. The perfect state of balance, calmness and composure of Soumah wines are expressed across the range, with the flagship wines receiving the graceful name ‘Equilibrio’.
The global press wax lyrical with strings of medals including the Decanter Gold winning Equilibrio Chardonnay and Decanter Platinum Equilibrio Pinot Noir.
"If I had to provide a brief statement to describe their wines – I would state, they are truly splendid and offer compelling drinking without the need to stress one’s wallet. From bottom to top, I believe these to be perfectly tuned with a satisfaction level of 100/100. They are not ‘pretenders’ and overdeliver with pure energy. The winemaking is skilful and the fruit, pure and natural. All in all, Soumah offer great drinking at affordable prices." - Stuart McCloskey
